A reader with a new favorite book.

I've always been a reader, especially of historical accounts of hunters, explorers and the like. I've read topics from the explorations of Lewis & Clark to Mark Twain's tales to Hemingway and a few of Capstick's books.

A few weeks ago I was reminded of one I hadn't read mainly due to lack of availability. Clay Newcomb has a podcast called Bear Grease (my current favorite). In one episode he retells the tale of Frederick Gerstaeker (author), his hunting party of Arkansas Indians and their hunting dogs along with hunting companion Erskine on an Arkansas bear hunt. I'll save the rest for you to explore if you so choose. BUT the remembrance of Gerstaeker sent me on a quest for his book Wild Sports in the Far West, often shortened to Wild Sports. Amazon may have killed local book stores but they came through with this find.

If you're like-minded, give it a read. Amazon has it and several more of Gerstaeker's writing between 12-15 bucks. Gerstaeker is a German so make sure you get the English translation! Hope you enjoy as much as I have.

Here is a book I really enjoy. I have purchased several copies to give as gifts. You can find it on Amazon for about $13.

Huntin' Gun: Men, Gun Feel, And Game by Walter R. Rogers & Jim Berryman.
