Purpose Built Rigs
I am kinda like Roy Yeager in that I tend to build/outfit handguns in categories based on how I will likely use them. This is the latest. A 625-6 45 acp Mountain Gun with a Trijicon SRO. This gun will be going to northern Alabama with me early next month for a hog hunt.
I had planned on hunting public land in Bankshead National Forest. Since I have never been there and really won't get to scout, i planned to just walk the thickets along the creeks hoping to catch some bedded down in the heat. This gun, stoked with 255 gr hardcast 45 Super, should be a perfect short range, low (shaded) light, easy to pack wheelgun with enough stomp for closer range hogs. The dot makes aiming easy in all light conditions.
I have since found out the in-laws may be setting something up for night time hunt on someone's lease somewhere. The 625 will still work with my NV goggles, as the SRO has two NV settings. So I should be set.either way. Purpose built.
Note the lanyard ring grip screw at the bottom of the grip. Been using these ever since a black bear hunt in Alaska. After coming downs a particularly steep and heavily wooded mountain, my buddy walked up to me and handed me my own S&W 44 mag Mountain Gun and said, "I believe this is yours". Swinging from alder to alder like Tarzan had apparently unsnapped my leather belt holster and another alder had snatched my revolver out. All unbeknowst to me, as I was concentrating on breathing heavily and not falling off the mountain. Lanyards are not just for calvary! At least for me anyway. I would probably would never have found that gun. I use them regularly in rough conditions now.
Alabama is kinda weird as even squirrels and rabbits have seasons! Not like Texas. Only summer legal game is feral hogs.

Anyway, hogs or no, just getting out and doing some armed hiking should be fun.
Hogue Grip Co. makes those lanyard grip screws for both S&W and Ruger that fit their grips. They only fit the rubber grips. I believe you have to call them to order, don't think they are listed on the web site.
