My favorite hunt
Whitetail have always been one of my favorite critters to chase. This one was in the Black Hills of Wyoming.
Most of the hunters in this area road hunt. The area has access roads around the bottom of the hills. So my general plan of attack is to climb up 400-500 feet and get 1-2 miles from the road. I generally see multiple deer during the day working the ridges.
on this day I had just paused watching a saddle and out popped this little guy. He saw me, I saw him, I had seconds to make it work.
I used tent pole shooting sticks and a red dot, 240 Sierra bullet, leupold range finder, and a Smith 629 PC.
The range was 174 Yards. I adjusted my hold for the drop and aligned for an impact with the front shoulder since he was angling steep towards me. The angle was so steep it was almost a frontal shot.
On the shot I lost sight of the deer but could hear the meat report. I circled and circled and couldn’t find blood. I finally turned it into a grid search and found the deer under a blow down pine tree top not more than 15 yards from where he was shot. The bullet entered in the front edge of the shoulder and stopped in the off side hip.

Awesome shot and beautiful deer.
