Semi-Autos

Insomnia is hard on bank accounts.

I recently scoped my .45 Super and have to say I am impressed by its 100 yard accuracy. Do to energy constraints I drew the line at 100 yards with that gun. At about 2:00 A.M. this morning I started thinking I have that nice Carver set up with the Crimson Trace scope. Why not build a long range auto and pull the scope back off the super? To be truthful that super had turned into one of my favorite guns. It is very accurate and so easy to shoot that anyone can shoot it well. I picked it up with the scope on it and realized I had really grown accustomed to the gun as it was open sighted. I can start with a new Gen 3, 10mm or .45 and build a designated 40 Super or .460 Rowland. In a properly set up gun the .40 Super can be safely loaded well into .41 Magnum power levels. The Scope would let it take advantage of the flat trajectory and power out to nearly 200 yards. Factory .40 Super loads are very watered down after one aftermarket supplier sold barrels with no ports or threads. They are no more powerful than a 10mm. The real full strength data for the .40 Super shoots 180 grain bullets nearly 300 FPS faster than a 10mm.

Plain barrels and .40 Supers = broken frames. A few years ago there were numerous pictures on the net of frames wrecked by running the full power Triton loads in a stock length unported barrel. For those that don’t know on the really hot cartridges such as the .45 Super, .40 Super and .460 Rowland the ports delay unlocking a few milliseconds until the peak pressure settles down. Starting out from the get go on a designated optic gun has several advantages such as relieving the ejection port on a factory Glock slide instead of cutting up a 700.00 super rare heavy. Going to the Barsto barrel allows me to fit the barrel, slide and frame and get away with a factory Glock slide. The key to great accuracy on Glocks is the barrel to slide and slide to frame fit. At the present Barsto is the only manufacturer that I know of that leaves the locking block and barrel lugs proud so you can hand fit them. This is a win win on the .40 Super or 460 Rowland. Obviously an accuracy gain and second, a stronger locking gun would be just what the doctor ordered. Since the gun will be a purpose built optic gun I won't have to worry about the sights at all. Isn't it great to have an understanding wife that knows why I need a new gun every month? Now .460 or .40 Super. I guess that will keep me up tonight.

Back when I played with Glocks a lot {and went to the armorers school}, there was a fellow making precision slide locks that supposedly gave better accuracy. I believe Graham was his name. I tried a couple and think he may have been on to something, but I still found caliber and slide length had a whole more to do with accuracy than just about anything else. Never did try the fitted match barrels though.
