460 Rowland project update.

So back in March I won at a K9 and bird dog competition a nice Sig STX 1911. So I decided the moment I won that gun it would be my 460 Rowland project.

First step was order the Rowland kit barrel and comp and springs. Now this Barrel has to be fitted to my gun. I was going to have them do it but when they told me I had to re-run my already owned gun through the ATF BG check (4473) I decided to have it done locally. Not sure the reason they do this it seems really strange.

So now work up some loads. My idea for this gun was a nice hardcast powdercoated bullet that fed reliably in the gun. My first try was 185 grain XTP. Not good I played with loaded length and case tension nothing seemed to work. I polished the feed ramp on the frame and the barrel still no good. So that load needs more work.

Next up is the Cast bullet that was cast from a Accurate Mould. I am using Printers lead with some plumbers lead but very little of that. I powder coat them then add the gas check size and lube them to .451.

Yes redudent but this works I shoot allot of cast bullets without any leading issues even in the rifles up to 2800 FPS velocities.

Shooting for reliability and accuracy I ended up settling on a load of 10.1 grains of Longshot the bullets weigh in at 224 grains finished. The Ave velocity is 1283 FPS. I load for accuracy them chronograph them afterall accuracy should be the number 1 reason for reloading besides economy. Considering the cost of a box of Hornady is so expensive the cast is far less expensive option if you shoot as much as I do. I will run these by Lab Radar and get velocities this week.

So far so good they hit hard they fed well and are accurate. This is hunting gun or woods gun the LFN is very effective on game in many cases good wound cavities and it actually will tumble and of course deep penetration.

Here is a pic of my project so far.

Glad to see someone getting into the 460 Rowland. I just picked up an FNX Tactical and now I am saving my pennies to send it in for the conversion!
