450 went to work
The Indiana firearm season opened Saturday and I was able to spend some time in a stand.
I had found a pocket of state land using the Onx app and scouted it recently so decided to hunt there
I saw 3 different bucks Sat morning but between it being windy and I couldn't hear well and it being very thick they got on me quick. I would have liked to have shot one,he was at 5 yards and walking fast and when I made a sound to get him to stop he bolted about 30 yards and just kept walking straight away.
I hunted until noon and then the wind had kicked up to about 30mph and it was 70 degrees so I got down.
I slipped out again yesterday after church around 1 and started to see deer movement around 4.
This big doe and another showed up a little after 5. She stepped out and I had my gun set up so that she was already in the scope. I watched her for some time and used the opportunity to get on target and ready to make the shot several times.
I wasn't really thinking about shooting her but then realized that I was there to put meat in the freezer.
I know there are good bucks in the area but I have a decent one on the wall and I don't really care about that kind of trophy.
I decided to take her and looked for an opening and put my scope on it. When she stepped in it and stopped I made the shot at about 40yds.
I am shooting a load recommended by Roy Yeager,300gr Hornady bullets over 322.
It made an entrance hole I can stick 4 fingers in and the same out the other side. Good blood trail from both sides. She ran hard for about 75 yds and as you can see went down with her feet under her.
This is the 5th handgun I have used to take deer with over the past 30+ years
I have only hunted with handguns for the last 13
I have a new 6.5jdj barrel set up. I may take it this weekend...
