The bullet failure thread...

OK, first, let's stay civil about this. Nothing seems to rile us handgun hunters up more than what kind of bullet is best. We've all had a bad experience with a bullet that someone else had a great experience with, and that's just the way it goes. Doesn't mean that person is bad for using that bullet.

Now that that's out of the way....

I want to hear your horror stories about bullet failure. Failure to perform as expected or failure to perform at all. Any details you can share would be great. Velocity, range, shot placement, etc. If you have a picture of the bullet, even better.

I'll start. I shot an axis doe with my .458 SOCOM SP using Underwood Ammo's 300gr Ballistic Tip. The shot went in her right shoulder while she was feeding head down and turned into her spine at the neck. Fortunately, it was lights out and she dropped right there. When I recovered the bullet, the core had completely separated from the jacket. Unfortunately, I can't find my picture of it!

They have thin jackets that are not "truly" locked to the core. I've personally witnessed a 200 gr FTX from a 460 blow up on a bad shot on a steer..hitting it on it's bottom jaw, blowing the majority of the cheek off, and the bullet didn't even go through the jaw bone. I've also seen the same bullet blow a 2 fisted hole in a deer, not exit, and completely come apart with only lead and jacket fragments to be found.
