Field Shooting Techniques?

I see a lot of conflicting info out there about exactly where you want to rest the handgun while shooting in the field.

Is it better to rest forearms on a bag and let the gun free-hang off the front? This is how I am currently hunting because it is easy to replicate this position at the gun range while practicing.

Or is the PSR style rest the best solution for consistency and accuracy at distance? If the PSR style rest is the way to go, do you rest the barrel on the front yoke or the frame in front of the cylinder on the yoke? Rest the bottom of the grip frame on a bag?

Any other rules of thumb to be aware of?

I should probably add that I am speaking specifically about Big Bore revolvers in the 454+ category if that makes a difference.

Thanks!

I keep trying various methods as I hate to carry a tripod but for the best accuracy for me I have been using a wooden rest simular to a PSR. I rest the frame in the front fork and the butt rest on a 1/2" foam pad cut from a camping mat. I use a pan head on the tripod with the side tilt locked and the swivel and up and down tilt loose enough that the recoil of the handgun will freely move it. I don't put much force on the rest, just enough to steady my aim hoping to keep the same point of aim for offhand shooting. I'm looking for a small bag like Chris Rhode uses to try for squirrel hunting. I think a small bag with a strap for around my hand will allow me to rest it against a tree.
