Hardcast HP Styles

I am fairly well versed in the terminal performance attributes of WFN style bullets and the effect that a large flat nose and velocity play in generating a wound channel with deep, straight penetration. Most of the bullets i choose to use for hunting are of this WFN variety and the results are excellent. Typical hunting for me is 25-50 yards, Hogs and Aoudad, 45 Colt in the +P power range (~260-270 WFN @1200-1300 fps).

I know that there are several folks on here that really enjoy the HP style of bullets, cast soft to generate expansion.

QUESTIONS...

  1. What is the scoop on terminal performance of these cast HPs versus the WFNs?

  2. Does penetration suffer substantially with a large HP and soft alloy?

  3. Is the shallow "Cup" HP design the best of both worlds? Bigger wound channel than WFN but better penetration than large HP?

I have attached an image of the popular MP mold as a reference to the various designs.

Thanks!

Mat

I found some good info on the expansion of LFN and cup points at 8.5 and 16 BHN from a 45-70. Faster velocities than our normal revolver loads but it is definitely interesting and informative.
