Cast lead bullets

For those of you that have used cast lead bullets, I’m looking at trying to get into casting my own. I haven’t used cast bullets for hunting only JHP bullets in both of my 41 Magnums. I’ve shot several different bullet weights and from a couple of bullet casters over the years. Got good accuracy as well. The best accuracy was achieved with 265 gr. “Keith” style bullets with a gas check in both my Contender and the Ruger SRH and 2400 powder, H-110 was good too. Most of the other bullets I tried shot really well, as far as hunting accuracy is concerned, but the 265’ shot the best.

Your thoughts are appreciated,

Keith

I will concur with all of Randy’s comments but say there is an exception. I have had issues with powder coated plain base bullets pushed hard, velocities over 1500fps. My issues only occur after 10-15 rounds fired. Those 10-15 give excellent accuracy and then it deteriorated, upon cleaning the bore little silver flakes of “lead”??? Can be seen coming out with each brush stroke. Then accuracy returns for another 10-15 rounds. A Gas Check placed on the bullet eliminated the accuracy deterioration. This issue has occurred with three different guns now, and both 4227 and H110 powders. So I would highly recommend a GC if you intend on pushing them hard. I know some have used a PC bullet in rifles with no GC and no ill effects, so perhaps it is related to velocity AND the faster burning powders used in handguns.

Other than that, a PC bullet, especially launched from an accurate .41mag is a great hunting combination. I’ve used several of Dick Thompson and Randy Barnetts PC’d bullets from my .41’s and 414sm. My wife has started using a 250gr. PCHP in prep for an upcoming black bear hunt this fall, she has several deer to her credit with that bullet already.
