Success In The Field

TWO-FERS

This has been quite a year for this old codger that's older than 4 hills or more. Got rockchuck #2000 in ID with handguns only...of course. Groundhog/rockchuck total now over 16,400 with my handguns.

Now it's summer deer season, i.e., crop damage permits.

Last night I saw a bunch of deer in a field bordering the farm I have permits on for corn damage. They kept feeding on the grass toward "my" farm. I was pretty well hidden. Finally, a big doe (bucks not legal on permits) jumped the fence. 191 yds. .375/.284 XP, 260 gr. AB. BOOM-drt. Another doe was close to the fence. She looked around for the noise. Couldn't see me. After 2 minutes she jumped the fence. 187 yds., same gun, same bullet, same effect-DRT!!

So, you may ask, why such a big gun & bullet. Well, I'm too damn old to be chasing deer. I originally used my .375 XP with 260 BTs. They're not made any more. When I was about out I decided to try the ABs. They actually created more damage than the BTs(1 1/2" exits, 3-4" of internal damage).

Theses deer were #79 & 80 for this summer. I've taken 36 with the .375. Two deer "ran" 5 yds. All others dropped, plus this gun shoots 1 1/2" all day.

I also have a super cool .325 WSM XP that JD built for me. I use 200 gr. ABs in it with the 23 deer I've taken with it. 2 ran 20-30 yds with it (it's not as "powerful" as the .375!!) Both guns have taken deer out to 300 yds. this year (350 last year).

This summer huntin' stuff is great. I still have over 2 dozen permits left. This year many deer were killed in 95-99* heat. Since I'm geeting old my deer cleaning time has decreased from 7 minutes to 8 minutes. These 2 deer were done in 19 minutes- had to pause a little to wipe the sweat off.

Oh, I had a surprise email this year from Bill Wilson new owner of Lehigh Defense. When he bought it I figured I was out of the bullet testing for Lehigh that I've done for 10+ years. Bill informed me I was getting 2 new kinds of Lehigh .30 cal. bullets. I've taken 8 deer with them in my HS .308. Super accurate, good damage, all dropped.

So far, I've used 8 different guns on these deer.

Stay tuned. I'm about to reach a new milestone with a handgun I don't think anyone else has achieved.
