First deer of the year
I finally got out after deer this year, with my 4 year old for his first time hunting with me. We saw deer Saturday afternoon, but didn't get any shots. This afternoon we headed out to my brother-in-law's ground blind. After an hour of no deer my son's patience and the snacks were gone. I about had my gear loaded up when my son saw ( what I thought was) a nice doe about 50 yards from us. By the time I got my 41 mag blackhawk and a small bag back out, she was nervous, walking back and forth behind some trees. She finally gave me a broadside shot and I touched it off and she jumped and ran a little ways stopping quartering away hard. I wouldn't normally take that shot, but we weren't all that far from the neighbor's fence so I put it on her hip and gave her another one. She took off out of sight and I thought I heard a crash. So we waited as long as a 4 year old can wait and headed out to find her. I started where I shot at her and couldn't find a drop of blood in 2 inches of fresh snow. But she dropped dead only about 40 yards from the second shot. Turns out it was a button buck. My first shot must have gone right over his back and the second one went in the right hindquarter, over the guts and through the lungs. Didn't find a bullet or exit. It wasn't pretty but it worked. My son was really excited, but he didn't want to touch it. Maybe next year. But he did take a really good picture for me.

Nothing better than memories made with the next generation of hunters. Good work dad.
