MN late season special hunt

Decided to tap in for our late season CWD

management hunt this weekend and see if I could break in my 7-30 waters. Loaded up the truck and drove 6 hours south through the fresh falling snow to some public ground and started pounding the bluffs to cut tracks.

Couldnโ€™t have asked for better conditions to track bucks! Fresh snow made for silent moving through the trees and great visibility through the bluffs.

Took this small buck at 75-80 yards. Quartering to shot, behind the shoulder. Bullet exited ahead of the offside hip. Lots of hair at impact site, basically no blood until last 10 feet of his 20 yard run.

About two hours later I cut across a fresh heavy trail moving up a basin nearby. Still hunting my way along the track as it sidehilled along a bluff, I decided to hook uphill to a ridge that overlooked where I believed the tracks to be leading. Thermals are wicked in this section and I didnโ€™t want them to be my downfall. Upon reaching the ridge I started glassing everything I could see, and there upon a ledge jutting out about 30โ€™ over the main trail lay a deer. He was overlooking the same valley and hillside I had been glassing. I crept in to 35-40 yards and took a high shoulder shot to anchor him in his bed (to avoid any cliff jumper predicaments). Core exited, jacket caught in offside hide. At ten yards I gave him another in the lungs as he hadnโ€™t expired yet.
