Success In The Field

Free handed doe

In Kansas we have a 3 day doe only firearm season October 7-9, we always go out and have a deer camp. My main focus is getting my boys on deer. Side note, first season my oldest is gone in the military, kind of different and sad..

Anyway, it was 15 minutes prior to last light and one of the boys shot a doe out of a large field. Ernst (one who shot), my son Mitch and I walked out into the field about 10 yards off the wood line and we started discussing how we would drag it out. Both boys left their rifles at at the wood line where we had been.

Mitch then says, almost yelling (kids lol) "DAD, GET YOUR GUN GET YOUR GUN". I turn around and a doe (button buck, didn't see it but legal) had stepped out of the wood line 55-60 yards out and was standing broadsides just looking at us.

I drew the Blackhawk 44 mag, loaded with a 240 gr Sierra JHP #8610 in front of 20.5 gr of Hercules 2400 powder. She was now quartering towards us, I aimed at the shoulder and generally sent it off.

She dropped like a rock, the hole in the photo is the exit. Bullet expand well, clipped the spin (she was slightly down a hill at the shot).
