Great 41 Magnum Article

Great write up on the 41 Magnum by Roy Yeager in the latest ”Sixgunner”. I’ve spent 40 years shooting… and reading about the 41 and Roy’s article is probably the best I’ve seen.

Of course the “stepchild“ 41 is and always will be compared to the much more popular 44Mag. I often see the 41’s flatter trajectory mentioned, often followed with the caveat that most shooters don’t shoot well enough to notice. (Thanks for not adding that one Roy) I generally hunt with open sighted revolvers at close range, and one would think trajectory is a non-factor. My hunting also in thick timber, and that is where the flat shooting 41 excels. I have steel targets set in an area that matches my hunting conditions at various ranges that allows year round practice. I’m amazed at how little it takes to deflect a bullet completely off course. I shoot with several different cartridges on this practice range and have found CONSISTENTLY that the 41 magnum shoots through much smaller “windows“ in the thick woods than all but one other cartridge. That other one is the 454 Casull. It makes sense as I had years ago found the same thing in my archery hunting. Fast shooting arrows didn’t give me more range but the ability to “thread a needle” with the arrow. My 41 Magnums offer this same needle threading accuracy in my thick woods.

Again, kudos to Roy for an excellent write up on a most excellent hunting cartridge.

My love affair with the .41 mag started long ago. When my future wife and I started dating, she was living with her brother and his wife. Her brother was a Deputy Sheriff and carried a 4" S&W Model 58 Nickel. We shot it a lot in his backyard.

Even before that in 1969 just before I got out of the USMC, I bought a 4 5/8" Blackhawk in .41 Mag. I still have it and have killed several deer with it at reasonably close range.

I have a 10" .41 Mag Contender I have not killed with yet but I plan to fix that.

I kind of like being in a .41 mag cult!
